Well, to put ourselves in Charles's shoes. We have to understand that he is an educated person. Yes, he was an adult and well educated, he could have done the right thing by not accepting the offer for the quiz show after knowing the fact that the quiz show is all a lie.
But at last, his greed took over his heart and participate himself to the scandal. We couldn't blame him for anything but greed. A person whose profession supposedly getting a high pay, got a considerably low income per month would like to win 20 thousand per week.
He confesses to his guilt at last because, as an educated person, he thinks that he had done a wrong thing and deceived millions of students. He did the confession because he would like to clear himself of the burden he carried. If that is Charles Van Doren. :)
In the movie, you can see, all player "decided to cheat" have educated (because the non-educated can not answer the questions), so we only see Van stand and sue Dan - what's about players before?
And in fact, he can't win the media.
Actually, he already knew he cheated people at the first show, but he still did "the cheating game show" that. I think in that case, we can say, he feel guilt and he can't leave just in silence so he chose to tell the true thing to audience.
